Internal Job Change

My current association has great benefits.  AMAZING benefits.  But I do not have much room for career growth in my current department.  Gone are the days of staying at one company for 30 years and eventually becoming CEO.  Sallie Mae does not care about employee loyalty and will eventually my payments will increase.  I like my department but there is truly nowhere for me to go.

Enter the internal job posting.  It looks great on paper and would be a bit of a salary bump. Several colleagues reached out to me to encourage me to apply for the position.  But internal job switches are tricky.  I needed to talk to my current manager before I applied.  And that conversation can be uncomfortable to say the least.  That bit is done but now I have to prepare for the interview.  As awkward as the conversation could be, the interview will likely be even worse.  I have poring over career advice articles to prepare for an internal job interview.  I wrote a thoughtful cover letter and I am working on my questions to ask the hiring manager.

Hope this goes well.

And to tie this into my blog title...I need to pick a nail polish color.

Life is hard.

Back like I never left?

Hello world.  Still floundering but at least I'm at the same association.  I need an outlet and every blog I read mentions the importance of blogging.  I'll give this another whirl.

Astronaut Wives Club. My first (and only) blog post mentioned my love of all things Mad Men.  As a curvy lady, I enjoyed the costumes and Joan's outfits have sorta informed work attire.  Dresses work best for me.  Fit and flare is my friend.  I like cardigans.Cardigans are important in navigating the sweltering, muggy days known as DC in the summer and freezing from the AC in my cubicle. Astronaut Wives Club is my summer TV drama.  I love the costumes and the colors.  I spent a good bit of my childhood summers on the Space Coast and it is interesting to see it as it once was.  It used to be filled with astronauts and "Space Cookies."  Now it is all shirt-less, leather skin surfers and snow bunnies.  Every time I think the plots have been dramatized for TV,  the google confirms those astronauts were indeed the hound dogs the show wants us to believe.

Anne Perry and the Murder of the Century.  For some reason I have seen the Kate Winslett film Heavenly Creatures about this case several times.  I stumbled upon the book and I have been casually reading it during my commute.  This is a good time to confess that I was a criminology major in college and crime will always have a special place in my heart.  Serial killers, ponzi schemers, mass murderers, etc.  Give me a documentary or film about them and I will watch it with rapt attention.  The book gives a really in depth analysis of the girls and the ways in which their intense friendship/lesbian relationship and isolated lives led them down this path of murder. So far I like it but I am only halfway through.

That's all I got for now.  We'll see how long I keep this up.

Cheers!

You Go Peggy O! You Go!

As a hardcore Mad Men fan, it just felt right to reference my love for Margaret Olson and the ladies of SCDP in the title of my first post.

First, a little about my blog.  I am still floundering in this thing called life, specifically my career.  I am finally in a place that I hope makes sense and enhances my marketability.  I wanted a place to express my thoughts on working nonprofits and associations and just as a young-ish woman trying to navigate through it all.  I tend to start blogs and lose interest and I am hoping that is not the case with this here little blog.  I plan to include bits about my work and my life.  Currently, I am nerding out about the film festival committee that I recently joined.  I get to watch documentaries and short films, peeps!! And talk about them.  Documentary nerd heaven.  I will watch a documentary about pretty much anything and will be enthralled for the entire time.  So I'll talk a little  about the documentaries I'm watching.  I also read on the train every day and talking about books would be fun. As a millenial, I am also interested in pop culture references and I'll sprinkle them throughout the blog. Gold star for you if you note the second pop culture reference in the title.

To recap, I'll be talking about nonprofit-y stuff and causes close to my heart, documentaries and books.  I will also be talking about Mad Men.  Lots and lots of Mad Men.

I love talking and thinking about Mad Men.  So many layers to the characters and the workplace dynamics.  I'll discuss that here as well.  Team Joan Halloway, just so we're clear.  I will not acknowledge the new Harris last name or the horrible person attached to it.  It is also worth noting that Peggy Olson is a badass.

And nail polish. I always wear nail polish.  I won't be talking about it but I like alliteration.
